Former Trinity Hall Junior Common Room (JCR) Welfare Officer Aoife Bennett was elected Welfare and Equality Officer of Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU).
Running unopposed for the position, Bennett was elected with 1,342 votes on the second count. Re-open nominations (RON) received the remaining 169, with 41 spoiled. There were 1,552 total valid votes.
She will take over the position from incumbent Chloe Staunton in June.
Speaking to Trinity News following her win, Bennett said: “I just can’t wait to work with everyone next year.”
Bennett ran on a platform of creating “long term change” within TCDSU, including plans to advocate for a “sliding scale” on the price of campus accommodation and lobby for a nation-wide change towards free period products in higher education.
Bennett is a Junior Sophister English studies student. Last year, she served as the welfare officer of the JCR. Bennett also worked with the Trinity Hall UniCoV scheme, which distributed Covid-19 testing kits to students.
In a poll conducted by Trinity News, Bennett received 91.4% of first preference votes.
