One theatre has it all this month, says Frances Beatty
I know the TN2 blog is the place to turn for news on what’s hot and what’s not. This month the Bewleys Café Theatre is the hottest venue in town. There will be a review in next week’s paper on their current production: The Friends of Jack Kairo (which is amazing). However, I’m here to give you a sneaky peak of what lies ahead.
Starting 1st February is 3 Women from the Moon. Performance starts at 20:00 but get there with time to spare because these events are popular and the theatre is small. 3 Women from the Moon is presented by Solas Theatre Company. It is a one hour hard-hitting social drama adapted for the stage from its original radio version.
Starting 11th February is Dr Millar. Doors open at 20:30. Irish Times’ Sean Millar is a national treasure. His rock n’ roll melodies combine biting lyrics and understated production to create music that even Hot Press considers worthy listening. In 1996 Millar was nominated solo performer of the year at the Heineken Hot Press awards and his first album ‘The Bitter Lie’ was recently voted one of the best Irish albums of all time by Today.fm and the Sunday Tribune.
Lastly, a little Valentine’s Day treat… From 14th February to 15th February (doors open 20:30) Bewleys is staging a Tribute to Love. Sounds slushy but this musical evening is performed by the talented Valerie Coyne who is becoming a big name on the Irish Jazz scene. And hell, in the intimate surroundings of Bewleys Café Theatre you can afford to indulge in a little romance. It’s so dark in there too that no one will be able to see you, let alone recognise you!
