Hamilton Library to partially reopen from next week

The Hamilton and John Stearne Medical Library have been closed for over two months

The Hamilton and John Stearne Medical Libraries are partially reopening from next week after a two month closure.

Students are to be able to access the libraries again from April 6 during a short timeframe on Mondays to Fridays.

The Hamilton Library is reopening on weekdays from 1pm to 5pm. Click and collect for materials is to be available between 1pm and 3pm, with no counter services in place.

The John Stearne Medical Library, which also is not providing a counter service, is opening from 12pm to 4pm.

Other Library buildings are remaining open at their current operating hours.

Kinsella Hall and the 1937 Postgraduate Reading Room are open from 8am to 10pm Mondays to Sundays, while the Berkeley, Lecky, and ground floor of the Ussher are open 1pm to 5pm Mondays to Fridays.

In an email to staff and students this afternoon, College Librarian Helen Shenton confirmed that the Library “remains open following yesterday’s Government announcement on the next phase of Covid-19 restrictions”.

“There are two further updates: Firstly, there are special arrangements in place for the Easter break,” Shenton said.

The Berkeley and Lecky, which are operating Mondays to Fridays, will be closed on April 2 and April 5 for Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively.

Kinsella Hall and the 1937 Reading Room will be available to those who have pre-booked spaces from 10am to 6pm on April 2, 3, and 5, but are closed on April 4 for Easter Sunday.

“Secondly, we are pleased to be reopening the John Stearne Medical Library and the Hamilton Library,” Shenton said.

In January, the Library’s hours were significantly reduced following the surge in Covid-19 cases around Ireland.

From January 22, the Hamilton and John Stearne Medical Library closed, while the opening hours in the Berkeley, Ussher and Lecky were cut from 9am to 6pm down to 1pm to 5pm.

The Hamilton Library houses texts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The John Stearne Medical Library, which is located off-campus in St James’ Hospital, holds texts on medicine, surgery and other clinical disciplines.
