Táimid i ndoimhneacht na Samhna, tá tú reo, traochta agus tá na bríste reatha céanna á
gcaitheamh agat ar feadh na seachtaine ar fad. Gan trácht ar na marcanna amhrasacha go
bhfuil carntha ar do seaicéad. Nuair a thiteann an teocht go dtí digití singil teipeann ar ár
gcuma mar thosaíocht. Do chuid éadaí ó fhéilte ceoil an tsamhraidh agus na beárbaiciú
spraoiúil le chairde atá anois i gcarn ag bun do vardrús nó féadfaidh siad codladh geimhridh i
gcúl do tharraiceáin, ag fanacht go dian a athaimsiú i gceann sé mhí. Ach cad a shílfeá dá
ndéarfainn leat go raibh bealach ann go bhféadfá fós na héadaí samhraidh is fearr leat a
chaitheamh i mí na Samhna? Cad a shílfeá dá ndéarfainn leat gur féidir culaith pinterest-
esque a chur le chéile gan an praghas niúmóine a íoc. Féadfaidh sé a bheith Samhain, agus
b’fhéidir go ndéanfadh an aimsir chrua na cúig nóiméad a fhanann tú ar an mbus damanta
ach ní chiallaíonn aimsir fhuar go nach bhfuil an deis agat chun slay. Nílim ag caint faoi
gheansaí breise ná ag caitheamh seaicéad ar bharr do chulaith. Ní chaithfidh faisean an
gheimhridh tú a chur ar ais go dtí Oíche Shamhna na hóige nuair a cheiltíonn do mham do
chulaith fhionnuar faoi chóta choiriúil ghránna ‘phraiticiúil’. Tá faisean gheimhridh iontach
ach éilíonn sé straitéis agus cruthaitheacht.
Seo iad na leideanna is fearr le slay an séasúr seo:
1) Foghlaim conas ciseal a dhéanamh.
Más féidir leat máistreacht a fháil ar ealaín na cisealta tá tú socraithe don séasúr. Is
féidir go mbeadh sé deacair fabraicí agus dathanna éagsúla a mheascadh agus a
mheaitseáil gan a bheith cosúil go bhfuil tú ‘gléasadh suas’ a imirt i seomraí feistis.
‘Tola vintage’. Comhsheasmhacht ingne sula ndéanann tú iarracht éagsúlacht.
Infheistiú i éadaí bunúsacha le coinneáil te agus sábháil na píosaí ráitis don bharr, ba
chóir go gcuirfeadh siad solúbthacht leis na héadaigh bhunúsacha. Tosaigh do cháir
bhunúsach le ciseal inslithe (m.s. riteoga dubh agus léine bhán muinchille fada) ansin
cuir do chulaith ráitis thar an gciseal inslithe (m.s. sciorta fada dubh le camisole dubh
sáite isteach thar an mbarr bán muinchille fada) Ar deireadh gabhálais; Ní hamháin
gur féidir leo teas breise a sholáthar, ach is féidir leis na bainteanna beaga seo an
cháir a ardú go hiomlán (m.s. cóta trinse feilte dubh, lámhainní leathair bána,
buataisí dubha) Tabhair faoi deara nach gá do phíosaí bunúsacha a chur i bhfolach i
gcónaí, bain úsáid as le do chiseal inslithe. (m.s. muineál turtair dubh nó bán nochta
faoi geansaí liath) Déan cinnte go bhfuil méid leordhóthanach de luiteoga, riteoga,
muineál turtair, léine muinchillí fada bunata neodrach chun dul faoi na héadaigh.
2) Daingean agus cluthar
Tá comhchuibhiú dathanna agus fabraicí riachtanach i gcomhdhéanamh aon chair
ach is minic nach ndéantar dearmad ar chothromaíocht, go háirithe sa gheimhreadh
nuair a bhíonn an cathú orainn foscadh a ghlacadh i gculaith ró-mhór. Má tá tú ag
caitheamh léine daingean roghnaigh bríste compordach mar bríste bunleathan nó
sciorta fada. De rogha air sin má tá luiteoga nó bríste géine daingean á gcaitheamh
agat is féidir leat geansaí scaoilte nó cardigan ró-mhór a chathaimh chun é a
chothromú. Cuireann an cleas simplí seo toise le do chuid éadaí, rud a fhágann go
mbeidh tú ag breathnú curtha le chéile gan mórán iarrachta. Ar mhaithe le teas
breise, má tá do leath bun níos scaoilte, caith riteoga nó luiteoga thíos, greamaigh
isteach i do stocaí iad, clúdóidh do phríomhbhríste é seo. Má tá do leath uachtarach cluthar cuir do léine inslithe isteach i do luiteoga nó bríste le coinneáil téite, clúdóidh do gheansaí é seo arís ionas nach gcuirfear isteach ar do stíl.
3) Infheistiú i seaicéad ráitis agus péire bróga marthanacha
Nuair a mheaitseálann agus a chomhlánaíonn gach rud níos mó nó níos lú cuireann
sé suas do wardrobe i bhfad níos mó ná dornán de phíosaí randamacha nach féidir
leat a chaitheamh le chéile choíche. Is deis iontach iad do sheaicéad agus do bhróga
chun pearsantacht a neartú i do chulaithí. Níl na míreanna seo saor ionas gur féidir
leat infheistíocht a dhéanamh i seaicéad agus bróga a mhairfidh tú an geimhreadh ar
fad gan a bheith leamh díobh. Má tá scéim dathanna d’éadaí geimhridh neodrach
b’fhéidir gurb é an t-am anois é chun dath éigin a thabhairt isteach. Is féidir leat
fanacht sábháilte freisin trí infheistíocht a dhéanamh i seaicéad agus bróga níos
simplí agus na daiseanna dath a shábháil le haghaidh píosaí ráitis agus gabhálais eile.
Tá seaicéid puffer an-fhaiseanta faoi láthair ach is rogha iontach eile é an cóta trinse
bocht. Seaicéadí deinime agus leathair, tugann siad pearsantacht cháir i ndáiríre ach i
dtéarmaí tú a choinneáil te ní leor iad féin. Bain sult as seo trí cochaill agus
geansaithe a leagan thíos. Maidir le bróga, déanfaidh Doc Martins nó aon bhróg ar
ardchaighdeán an post. Rogha eile ná loafers dea-chaighdeán, Filas, Buffalos, aon
bhróg ollphéistocht go féidir an bháisteach a choinneáil amach, cuireann siad
leithscéal eisceachtúil ar fáil freisin chun stocaí a chisealú, fiú briseadh amach do
phéirí Nollag clúmhach. Seachain bróga íseal nó bróga déanta as fabraic bog céim
mhíchúramach amháin sa tsráid agus beidh do chosa sáithithe. Go críochnaitheach,
gan Converse a chaitheamh!
4) Téann geansaithe le sciortaí agus gúnaí ní mór duit ach a bheith straitéiseach.
Táimid tar éis a chinneadh má fhaigheann tú airgtheach le cisealú, ní gá duit do chuid
éadaí samhraidh a dhíbirt go smior agus ar chrannóga do sheomra leapa. Sa domhan
faisin tá miotas ann gur chóir gúnaí a chaitheamh ina n-aonar, agus nach féidir
sciortaí a chasadh le geansaí. Tá go leor féidearthachtaí ann le faisean an
gheimhridh ní mór duit aird a thabhairt ar do chur chuige. Coinnigh i gcuimhne
pointe 2) Iarmhéid. Riteoga patrúnaithe agus muineál turtair le gúna duillín síodúil
caith os a chionn, álainn. Cad mar gheall ar gúna daingean leis an geansaí muineál
criú is fearr leat chun tú a choinneáil te. Ciallaíonn riteoga tiubh agus léinte fada
daingean go bhfuil sciortaí agus gúnaí fós ina roghanna.
5) Mhaisiú
Ná bí ag gáire, is féidir le hataí, lámhainní agus scaifeanna do chulaith a fheabhsú. Ní
gá duit tú féin a theorannú don olann amháin, tá lámhainní leathair faiseanta agus tá
scaifeanna breacán san fhaisean chomh maith. Cé go bhfuil an fheidhm is mó de an
Tríonóide ornáideach seo ná ag coinneáil teolaí thú, bí fiáin le do chuid gabhálais go
háirithe má tá do chulaith stáplacha ar an taobh níos pléineáilte. Babhtáil na riteoga
simplí le haghaidh cinn neamhghnácha le patrún, cuir stocaí glúine ard a chur os
cionn góiséireachta trédhearcach, triail a bhaint as loirgneáin theolaí, beiré nó hata
bairéidín a chur in ionad hata cniotála leadránach. Cuimhnigh gur féidir le
mionsonraí beaga difríocht ollmhór a dhéanamh, ciseal muinicí, chaitheamh fainne
cluaise agus fáinní funcaí moladh do stíl le smidiú éagsúla, tugann gabhálais do
chulaithis bhféiniúlacht. Más é do chulaith an príomhfhócas téigh ná déan ró-úsáid ar na gabhálais. Is é an sprioc go mbeadh thart ar deich chulaith agat a théann le chéile ionas gur féidir leat céad teaglaim éagsúla a chruthú.
Sa samhradh is gnách linn dearmad a dhéanamh go bhfuil sé éasca é a ghléasadh le
haghaidh aimsir níos teo. Tá sé i bhfad níos casta a bheith faiseanta i rith an
gheimhridh ar deireadh thiar ach is deis í a bhfuil faillí mhór á déanamh agat chun do
fashionista istigh a shaoradh! Foghlaim conas ciseal agus maisigh. Bí dána agus cuir
tú féin in iúl trí phíosaí léiriú agus tú inbhuanaithe trí éadaí bunús iontaofa
ardchaighdeáin a bhailiú a chaithfeá gach lá. Más féidir leat gléasadh do
dhrochaimsir an gheimhridh is féidir leat aon séasúr a slay.

Slaying in Winter
We are deep into the depths of November; you’re exhausted, freezing, and have been
wearing the same tracksuit bottoms all week, not to mention your puffer jacket has
accumulated some questionable stains. When the temperature plummets to single digits,
looking good fails to be a priority of ours. Your go-to outfits from summer music festivals
and brilliant barbeques with mates now lie in a depressed heap at the bottom of your
wardrobe, or perhaps hibernating in the back of your drawers, desperately waiting to be
rediscovered in six months. But what if I told you that you could still wear your favourite
summer pieces in November? What if I told you that it’s possible to piece together a
pinterest-esque ensemble without paying the price of pneumonia. It may be November and
the cruel weather might make that five-minute bus wait borderline unbearable but cold
weather doesn’t mean you can’t slay. I’m not talking about an extra hoodie or throwing a
jacket on top of your outfit; winter fashion doesn’t have to bring you back to childhood
Halloweens when your mom concealed your cool costume under a criminally ugly “practical” jacket. Winter fashion is fabulous, but it requires strategy and creativity.
Here are the best tips to slay this season:
1) Learn to layer
If you can master the art of layering, you are set for the season. It can be hard to mix
and match various fabrics and colours without looking like you’re playing dress up in
Tola vintage changing rooms. Nail consistency before you attempt variety. Invest
in basics to keep warm and save the statement pieces for on top they should serve
to add versatility to the basic outfits. Begin your basic outfit with an insulation layer (e.g., black tights and a white long-sleeved shirt). Now begin layering your statement outfit
over the insulation layer (e.g., long black skirt with black camisole tucked in over the
white long-sleeved top). Finally accessories; not only can they provide extra warmth,
but these little touches can completely elevate an outfit (e.g., black felt trench-coat,
white leather gloves, black boots). Note that your basic pieces don’t always have to
be hidden, play around with your insulation layer. (e.g., black, or white turtleneck
peeking out from grey crew-neck jumper) This season turtlenecks, under-armours,
tight long-sleeved tops, tights, and leggings will be your best friend. Stock up on
basic white, nude, black and grey colours for under your statement outfits.
2) Tight and cosy
Harmonising colours and fabrics is vital in the composition of any outfit but what is
often overlooked is balance, especially in winter when we are seized by the
temptation to take shelter in an entirely oversized outfit. If your top half is tight such
as a fitted bodysuit or cropped long sleeved top, opt for cosy pants like flares or a
long skirt. Alternatively, if your bottom half consists of leggings or tight jeans you can
afford a baggy jumper or oversized cardigan to balance it out. This simple trick adds
dimension to your outfits making you look put together with minimal effort. For
extra warmth if your bottom half is looser layer up with tights or leggings
underneath, tuck them into your socks, your main pants will cover this. If your top
half is playing the cosy role tuck your insulation top into your leggings or trousers to
keep toasty, again your jumper will cover this so your style won’t be compromised.
3) Invest in a statement jacket and pair of durable shoes
When building a versatile wardrobe, keeping it plain will serve you in the long run.
When everything more or less matches and compliments it spices up your wardrobe
far more than a bunch of random pieces that you can never wear together. Your
jacket and shoes are a prime opportunity to reinforce personality in your outfits.
These items aren’t cheap so you may as well invest in a jacket and shoes that will last
the entire winter without you growing tired of them. If the colour scheme of your
winter wardrobe is neutral now might be the time to introduce some colour. You can
also play it safe by investing in a plainer jacket and shoes and save the pops of colour
for statement pieces and other accessories. Puffer jackets are currently very
fashionable however a brilliant alternative is the humble trench-coat. Denim and
leather jackets really give an outfit personality but in terms of keeping you warm
they alone won’t suffice. Play around with this by layering hoodies and jumpers
underneath. When it comes to shoes, Doc Martens or any good quality boot will do
the job. Another option are good quality loafers, Filas, Buffalos, any monster
stomper type of shoe that can keep the rain out, they also provide an exceptional
excuse to layer up with socks, even to break out your fluffy Christmas pairs. Avoid
anything flat or made of a soft or light fabric, one careless step in the street and your
feet will be soaked. Conclusively, no converse!
4) Jumpers go with skirts and dresses; you just have to be strategic
We have established that if you get inventive with layering you don’t have to banish
your summer clothes to the nooks and crannies of your bedroom. In the fashion world there is a myth that dresses should be worn alone, and skirts can’t be casualised with a jumper. Anything is possible with winter fashion. The execution of your outfit depends on your approach. Keep in mind point 2) Balance. Patterned tights and a turtleneck with a silky slip dress thrown over, unreal. How about a bodycon dress with your favourite crewneck to keep you warm. Thick tights and tight long-sleeved tops mean that skirts and dresses are never off limits.
5) Accessorize
Don’t laugh, hats, gloves and scarfs can elevate your outfit. You don’t have to limit
yourself to wool, leather gloves are chic and tartan or plaid scarfs are trendy. While
the main function of this decorative trinity is keeping you snug, be wild with your
accessories especially if your staple outfit is on the plainer side. Swap the plain
tights for quirky patterned ones, put knee high stockings over transparent hosiery,
experiment with leg warmers, substitute the boring knit hat for a stylish beanie or
berets. Remember that small details can make a massive difference, layer necklaces,
wear funky earrings and rings, compliment your style with various makeup looks,
accessories award your outfits their own identity. If your outfit is the main focus go
easy on the accessories. The goal when creating a solid winter wardrobe is to have
ten or so outfits that compliment each other and therefore have the potential to be
transformed into one hundred different looks.
In summer we tend to take for granted the ease of dressing for warmer weather. Being
fashionable during winter is ultimately far more complicated however it’s a severely
neglected opportunity to liberate your inner fashionista! Learn to layer and accessories. Be bold and express yourself through statement pieces while being sustainable through the
accumulation of good quality reliable basics which you will wear every day. If you can dress
for the miserable winter weather, you’re capable of slaying any season.
