Ireland’s Climate Youth Delegate to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Trinity student Jenny Salmon, has urged participation in a survey seeking young people’s views on national climate priorities.
The survey aims to capture young people’s views on climate action in order to include them in a list of national climate priorities to guide Ireland’s work at 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28).
Salmon, a fourth year law student, told Trinity News: “It’s so important to fill out this survey because for this year, there is this opportunity for us as young people to have a say before the National Climate Delegation creates their final COP priorities.”
“This is significant. There have been those criticising this process as ‘youth wash’ but given that it’s one of the first opportunities for youth to present nationally in this way, why would we prematurely dismiss this before trying? Fill in the survey and let your voice be heard.”
Salmon will accompany Ireland’s official delegation to the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai in November.
The National Climate Delegation is a group of experts from across Government departments and agencies who represent Ireland on international climate change matters.
Each year, the National Climate Delegation, a group of experts from across government departments, draft a list of national climate priorities to guide their work at COP.
The survey, prepared by Salmon, is open to anyone under the age of 35 living in Ireland.
She will present the results of the survey to the National Climate Delegation in October. The survey will close on October 12.
