Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) President Gabi Fullam has cautioned against an email scam claiming to be her.
Fullam shared a screenshot of the fraudulent email, which was sent to an unidentified member of staff, with the warning “if you received this email – you are being scammed!”
The email, sent from the email address [email protected], told the recipient “I’ll be needing your assistance.”
It continued: “Kindly send me your WhatsApp number so as to complete a minor task right now.”
According to Fullam’s Tweet, this was followed by a request to purchase iTunes vouchers and send them to the scammer.
Speaking to Trinity News, Fullam said that “it is unfortunate that someone is impersonating me for the purposes of a scam and I hope nobody falls victim to this or any other scams”.
In the past, Gardaí have warned against similar scams involving the purchase of iTunes gift cards, and have advised people to be vigilant.
Fullam added: “In the middle of a cost of living crisis, we have seen people in desperate situations be taken advantage of in rental scams. We urge caution to everyone when engaging in monetary transactions.”
In August, Gardaí issued a warning to students against rental scams, reports of which rose by 30% between February and July of this year.
Fullam lastly noted: “Please DO NOT buy me iTunes vouchers. I have a Spotify account so there is really no need.”
